It may be getting a couple of new high-rise towers; however, the City of Delta doesn’t have a great deal of construction going on. In addition, it doesn’t really have a thriving nightlife, at all.
With that in mind, there are still a few things to do. The Tsawwassen Mills shopping centre, for example, has a plethora of stores and eateries to enjoy. Further, there’s Centennial Beach
And, while all of these places are fun, they don’t exactly fit the description necessary for the nightlife scene. There are some places to enjoy a night out in Delta, but the city could certainly use some more options.
That’s where the idea for a bustling casino comes in.

A Casino in Delta
Back in September 2017, the BCLC gave gave preliminary approval to Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Ltd to build a casino in Ladner. Also, it specified The Delta Town and Country Inn and the site for the new construction.
The new casino would create 700 new jobs as well as a $70 million investment into the Delta economy.
The area would be close to the 10-lane bridge that will potentially replace the George Massey Tunnel; As a result, it is a prime location to attract a large amount of people to the casino.
Further, the area isn’t residential and is easily accessible via transit. Filings also states that the location aligns with the vision for Delta’s tourism strategy.
With that in mind, not everyone is behind the development.
On Monday, April 9th, city council discussed the site development with the public. Now, the proposal will go to public hearing in Ladner on May 1st.
“In total, about 425 people attended the information meetings put on by the city. Overall, comments showed people were concerned about potential traffic problems, a possible increase in crime, money laundering and the impact on residents in the surrounding area,” reports the Surrey Now Leader.
Evidently, locals are worried about the negative effects on the local community; one of the biggest concerns gambling addictions.
Do you think that the City of Delta would benefit from a new casino, or do you think it is a bad idea? Alternatively, do you think it should go somewhere other than Ladner?
