Fall is all about mystery and intrigue. So why not up your drinking game by exploring one (or all) of the best speakeasies and secret bars in Vancouver.

These spots prove the city does have a bustling nightlife scene, contrary to what some people may think.

Best Speakeasies and Secret Bars in Vancouver

Bagheera

This hidden speakeasy pay homage to the spirit of the Indian subcontinent at the turn of the 20th Century, featuring hues of gold, red, teal and imperial purple. There is also a 45-foot hand-painted jungle mural that spans the entire north wall across from the 42-foot bar. The curved ceiling also gives off vibes of a underground space hidden away from prying eyes.

Location: Behind the Happy Valley Turf Club at 518 Main Street

How To Get In: You’ll need to place a wager at the counter on “King Louie”.

Arcana Spirit Lounge

Vancouver’s newest speakeasy, Arcana Spirit Lounge, aka Pet Psychic just opened. Although their store front and website may make it seem like caters to our feline friend, the inside is actually a bar with a cool occult theme with tons of candles and eerie dark touches. There are amazing food and drinks, as well as a cocktail wheel for those who wants to try something new.

Location: Inside Pet Psychic at 238 Abbott St, Vancouver

How To Get In: You can just walk in, although reservations are recommended

This is a fairly new speakeasy that opened in Yaletown, behind the burger and beer bar Hundy. This is a low key hangout with amazing drinks, a pool table, and you can also order amazing smash burgers from the restaurant as well.

Location: 1144 Homer Street, Vancouver

How To Get In: You’ll find the bar via archway entrance, down a long hallway, and pass a door that says “Private”.

This hidden cocktail bar just opened up in Gastown over the summer, so it’s still very much a secret to most. The open-air space is tucked away in an alley and serves up killer cocktails and authentic Mexican bites. But half the fun of this spot is just finding it. It’s close to La Taqueria’s Gastown location and while it’s not quite visible from the street, you’ll be able to find it by venturing to the back alley and going through a secret gate opening.

Discover this mysterious and incredibly glamorous speakeasy nestled in Chinatown. Laowai is taking over the spot that was once home to Mamie Taylor’s. And It’s quite literally tucked away behind a fake freezer at the BLND TGER dumpling shop. Guests can sip on a plethora of creative cocktails here that they just won’t be able to find anywhere else.

How To Get In: Order the “Number 7” and you will be escorted to the shop’s faux freezer door, which leads to the trendy bar

Key Party

This Vancouver hotspot on Main Street is located behind an inconspicious accounting office. From the front, you’ll see a desk, cabinet, shelf and a few framed photos on the wall. But it’s all just a hoax. The 40-seat lounge known as Key Party is actually located through a door right next to the desk. The name and theme of the bar is a nod to the 1970s, where people would host swinger parties.

While the bar itself is no secret, there is a hidden lounge to be found. This swanky bar is in Parq Vancouver and guests can find a secret space by pushing a bookshelf (that is actually a door leading to a private room). It’s the perfect place to sip on one of their innovative cocktails, from their emperor’s sour to crouching tiger.

Location: 39 Smithe Street, Vancouver

How To Get In: Find the bookshelf that leads to a private room

The Narrow Lounge

This dimly-lit lounge is brought to you by the same minds behind Key Party. It’s also a very narrow space, hence its name. The cozy atmosphere lends itself to sharing a plate of nachos or a stiff drink with your neighbours. Sip on timeless cocktails like the negroni or aperol spritz. For eats, dig into Mexican-inspired fast food with an East Van twist. While the address is on Main Street, you actually access it on 3rd Avenue, where you’ll go through a secret door that is covered in graffiti.

It isn’t hard to see why people are so captivated by this amazing hike. While challenging, the 47 mile backpacking adventure offers some profoundly beautiful scenery.

From tumbling waterfalls to lush, green forests, stretches of awe-inspiring beach to impossibly tall trees, the journey leaves an imprint on the soul.
What’s more, this five to seven day hike truly is an adventure. Travellers must wade through rivers, negotiate steep slopes, climb ladders and use cable cars.

The Friends themed Airbnb is just like Monica and Rachel’s (and later Monica and Chandler’s) apartment. Aptly named “The One with the Purple Apartment”, it features the same lilac-coloured walls as the one on the hit tv show.

Every corner of the space has been adorned with references to the beloved sitcom “Friends.” Visitors can expect to see everything from pictures of the show’s cast to intricate details of Monica’s kitchen.

There are so many fun props that will make your stay extra fun trying to find them all. There are artwork and popular catch phrases from the show (ie: Pivot!), and a designated spot for Central Perk. Joey’s cuddly penguin, “Hugsy,” can be found sitting on the bed. While Phoebe’s artwork Glady is peering out at you from a frame on the wall.

Although it is not an exact duplicate of Monica’s iconic apartment, this charming and cozy space is equally delightful and inviting. There are a features a plethora of Friends-inspired games and trivia, making it a must-visit destination for any fan of the show.

The Airbnb is conveniently located in downtown Victoria, and costs only about $150 / night, and has everything you need.

You might think getting serenaded by a live surf band involves a journey overseas; however, the Shameful Tiki Room offers an escape into the bygone tiki era right here in Vancouver.

Located at 4362 Main Street, this gem is one of the city’s most unique offerings. The bar’s concept hails to the aforementioned tiki era, which the establishment’s decor and atmosphere reflect. What’s more, the room holds weekly and one-off events that are inspired by that theme. These events include entertainment, such as sassy go-go dancers and charming ukulele players, as well as fun parties.

The eclectic watering hole also houses the city’s only rum club, and gives patrons the chance to receive a “members only” t-shirt. In order to receive the famed tee, guests must sample 25 rums from around the world and reach Honorary Status.

Upon sipping all 50 rums, patrons get their names emblazoned on plaques hanging proudly from the wall.

While many of their cups are cool, there’s something particularly enticing about drinking out of one of their exotic bowls – especially since some of them are flaming! Also, the drinks’ names are almost more enticing than they look. From the ‘Mystery Bowl’ to the ‘Voodoo Bowl,’ the ‘Volcano Bowl’ to the ‘Blood of the Kapu Tiki.’

In addition to rum, they include a plethora of colourful cocktails, all perfect for sipping the night away in this fun scene.

Scandinave Spa, Whistler

Escape to this little slice of heaven in Whistler. You can spend the day lounging in hammocks, saunas and steam rooms. But the main idea is to bathe in cold and hot baths, Scandinavian style. It also doesn’t hurt that everything is located outside overlooking lush trees. Book a massage while you’re at it.

Calvert Island is remote and really is what dreams are made of. It’s nestled on the southern edge of the Great Bear Rainforest just north of Port Hardy. Home to a variety of secluded bays, coves and lagoons just waiting to be explored. It looks much more tropical than what you’d expect to find in the province. In fact, this destination is often referred to as the Caribbean of BC.

To find it, guests have to wander to the back of the burger joint and make their way through the stockroom, which will lead to the super swanky and top secret bar, complete with pool tables.

Wash all that delicious food down with one of their beers (lager, pale ale, ipa), a glass of wine or a tropical cocktail.
