Captivating photos have emerged, showcasing colossal sand sculptures at White Rock beach.

These awe-inspiring images transport us back to the era when the beach used to host annual sandcastle competitions in the 70s and 80s.

For those who are unfamiliar with that time, these snapshots offer a glimpse into the cherished traditions and rich history of our beloved beachside community.

White Rock Sandcastle Competition

According to White Rock Museum & Archives, the competition was held every summer from 1979 to 1987.

During the competition, teams were given four hours during low tide to craft the most impressive sand sculptures on the beach. Upwards of 100,000 people would gather annually at Semiahmoo Bay to attend the competition.

The event was free for spectators and as it grew in popularity, the festival became a local and international phenomenon.

Unfortunately, it was eventually cancelled due to apparent “rowdyism.” And today, the sandcastle competition only lives on in the minds of those who experienced it.

Efforts have been made to revive the competition, with smaller versions being held in 2008 and 2012.

However, in recent years, there have been concerns raised against its return. These concerns revolve around potential negative impacts on the beach’s ecosystem and the challenges of managing crowds in the area.

Wildlife is nothing new in Vancouver, and spotting an orca out in the ocean isn’t unusual. A shark however? Now that’s not an everyday sight.

A local woman was out paddle boarding at East Beach by White Rock Pier when she got the shock of her life by finding what appeared to be a shark in the waters.

Local spots a shark in the waters by White Rock Pier

Local resident Shannon Sayers shared a fascinating (and terrifying) story with 604 Now about her close encounter with a shark last week.

Sayers was paddling at East Beach while on her way home when she noticed in the distance what she thought was a seal floating on its back.

As she got closer, she nearly fell off her board when she realized it was a shark about 6 to 8 feet long with 6 gills.

The shark however, appeared to be dead.

The initial shock caused her to accidentally hit her shin on the back of her paddleboard. She now humorously calls it her ‘shark bite’ and a way to remember the surprise.

Responses to the post

Sayers also shared her story on Facebook, and people were less than excited about the event, with various levels of disbelief.

“Ok that totally freaks me out to go swimming at the beach! Eeeeeek! I didn’t know we had sharks of any kind – thought our part of the Pacific wasn’t warm enough!”

“Oh that’s a big fat NO!”

“I’m never going swimming in the ocean again ….”

“straight out of my nightmares lol”

Another local, Sarah Beatty Hippern, captured photos of the same shark washed ashore later that day.

Although not confirmed, many believe that this is a sixgill shark, as numerous have been spotted all over the B.C. Gulf Islands this spring.

While sixgill sharks are frequently encountered in British Columbia, their usual habitat is found at depths of up to 1.5 kilometers off the western shores of Vancouver Island.

It was also indicated that the marine conservation team arrived later that day and was able to successfully retrieve the shark’s body from the waters. The incident reminds us of when a group of sharks was spotted swimming near Stanley Park.

Businesses located along White Rock beach as well as the White Rock Business Improvement Association (BIA) are disappointed with the city’s decision to end free waterfront parking on weekdays from November to January (a huge bonus during the free winter festival). Instead, visitors will now have to pay to park along the beach year round.

Winter Parking

The City is defending its decision to help reduce an anticipated 9.17% property tax increase in 2023.

Charging visitors to park during the winter will only make a slight difference, but “every little bit helps,” Mayor Megan Knight said during a recent finance meeting.

White Rock BIA

The White Rock BIA has taken a public stance against the decision, and also shared a letter addressed to the mayor and council. They also took to social media to share the following message:

We were very disappointed to hear the City of White Rock’s decision to end free waterfront parking on weekdays from November to January.

While we appreciate that the City of White Rock has limited avenues to raise revenues, we believe that there are better ways to earn what is, compared to their budget and the parking revenue in the summer months, a small amount of revenue.

Pay parking is inherently a barrier to business. We believe that municipalities have an important role to play in economic development, and removing barriers to business is a crucial part of that role.

In their letter, they pointed out that based on past data, the city generated an average of  $183, 942 between November to January. By comparison, the city generated $497, 041, or $16,033 per day in the month of July.

Some of the comments on the post included current or potential business owners highlighting the issue with year-round paid parking.

“I had to turn down a nice space along the waterfront. Pay parking was a major concern. Speaking with some of the neighboring businesses, the consensus was that pay parking was an impediment to success on the beach.” said one user.

“This is disappointing and shortsighted. Everyone is hurting financially right now, cities and businesses but given the hardships Marine drive has faced over the last few years it finally was starting to feel like they were getting a chance to get back on their feet. New businesses were opening and here again council pulls the rug out from under them again. It must be so difficult for those small businesses to plan anything when every time there’s a new council something changes for them. To have to shift your business model every 4 years is unfair and impractical. There has to be another way to make up the shortfall” added another.

One of the commenters suggested a parking pass for local residents:

“They should offer the annual parking passes for South Surrey residents. It would bring in additional revenue and also encourage locals to visit white rock beach and the businesses there more often.”

At the regular council meeting on March 27, White Rock council approved the first readings of a bylaw amendment that proposes an increase in parking fees at the waterfront and the elimination of free winter parking and the shoulder season between winter and summer months.

The Finance and Audit Committee discussed and voted on the measure during that afternoon’s meeting. For the amendment to become law, a subsequent final reading will be required.

Do you think White Rock should end free winter parking? Let us know in the comments below.

If you grew up in Metro Vancouver, you likely have fond memories of going to White Rock with your friends and family.

And one of the most exciting things to do there was check out the giant White Rock on the shores of Semiahmoo Bay, which of course is how the city got its name.

But you may have noticed over the years that the iconic White Rock is not quite as big as it seemed when you’re younger. While a lot of things often seem bigger when you’re a kid, this one actually has some truth to it.

According to the White Rock Sun, the boulder is slowly disappearing into the ground. It has sunk approximately 4 feet over the last 115 years.

More about the white rock

The large boulder that sits on the beach near the promenade is a 486 tonne granite stone. It was reportedly brought to shore by a breakaway piece of glacier many years ago.

According to local legend, the rock was named after a white rock that was used by the Semiahmoo First Nations people as a landmark for navigating the waters of Boundary Bay. The rock was also said to have served as a meeting place for the Semiahmoo people and early European settlers.

Ever since then, it’s become a popular fixture in the region. And hopefully, it will be around for many more years to come.

Today, the White Rock is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Visitors can walk along the promenade and admire the stunning views of the rock and the ocean, or take a stroll on the beach and get up close and personal with the rock itself.

You can learn more about the city of White Rock by reading it’s history here.

The once-popular Pacific Inn Resort in Surrey, also known as the Pink Palace, closed its doors in 2018 to undergo major renovations. Although there have been proposals to reopen the hotel over the years, none have ever gone through. Instead, it was painted white, and became the site of paranormal tours, and then a filming location, even appearing in a Stephen King web series.

The latest update, though, has the Pink Palace listed for sale as a ‘rare and exclusive opportunity’.
