This year, the event returns from June through August at the Shipyards. The best part? Admission to all outdoor movies is absolutely FREE.

Free Outdoor Movies at North Vancouver’s Shipyard

Sunset Cinema at The Shipyards – Wednesdays (Jul 31 – Aug 28)

North Vancouver’s shipyard also hosts free outdoor movies from Sunset cinema on Wednesday nights during the month of August.

This year’s line up includes:

  • Wednesday, July 31 – Barbie
  • Wednesday, August 7 – The Princess Bride
  • Wednesday, August 14 – Top Gun: Maverick
  • Wednesday, August 21 – Finding Nemo
  • Wednesday, August 28 – Pitch Perfect

Sunset Cinema is located in the Shipyard Commons. This is a covered, outdoor space. There are public bathrooms available on-site, as well as food trucks.

Note that movie nights are subject to air quality, and may be postponed or cancelled in the event of smoky weather.

Deckchair Cinema on Cates Deck at the Shipyards – Thursdays (Jun 27-Aug 29)

In its third year, Deckchair Cinema returns, offering audiences a delightful summer of films, pre-show music and entertainment.

Admission is free, however donations are accepted. The donation also gets you access to the Polygon Gallery’s Summer exhibition Anti-Icon: Apokalypsis (on from July 12 – September 29).

Food and drinks are also available at the event’s concession stand. Visitors can enjoy a refreshing alcoholic beverage from local breweries while watching the movie, as Cates Deck is a designated public space for alcohol consumption.

Movies at Civic Plaza

Civic Plaza is situated between City Hall and the North Vancouver Public Library. Public washrooms are available at the library until 9 pm, after which an on-site portable toilet is available

. The Library Teen Advisory Council will also be operating a concession stand offering popcorn, chips, and drinks for $1, with proceeds supporting teen programs at the library.

Bring the kids to Cates Park off of Dollarton Highway for some family fun. This park features a fun playground, picnic area, beach access, lots of green space, and some lush walking trails. Plus, there’s ample parking.

Moodyville Park

This is easily one of the best parks the North Shore has to offer. The massive wooden structures provide incredible options for adventures and there’s lots to climb. Be sure to check out the ziplines, the huge metal toboggan, the built in trampoline, and the mini bike hill.

Panorama Park Playground

Although a slightly smaller playground than the rest, it has amazing views and a super cool climbing tower with a long tunnel slide. It is a great way to spend some time by the water on a great day. There are scenic walking trails nearby, as well as a sandy-pebbly beach area.

Bridgman Park Playground

This is North Vancouver’s first completely accessible playground, with recycled rubber surfacing across the entire playground, along with perimeter safety fencing. It has several unique play features, including an in-ground trampoline, a zip line, and an accessible side swing. The playground’s design helps meet the needs of children with Autism spectrum disorders, sensory processing disorders, visual impairment, and mobility challenges.

Murdo Frazer Playground

This popular park has a playground with a climbing wall, monkey bars and much, much more. Plus, it’s in a beautiful forested area with lots of walking trails nearby. It also has a charming little cabin, which is where a lot of filming takes place, including the Netflix favourite Virgin River.

Heywood Park

This 16-hectare park features forested areas, sports fields and a landscaped area with a playground. The playground features a zipline, big sandbox, baby-friendly structure and a larger one for older children. It also offers easy access to the creek and nature trails.

Upper Lynn Valley Elementary Playground

This elementary school playground has so much to offer. It has lots of unique play areas, including a spider web climbing net, battle monkey bars, side-by-side long slide, stair-ladder, bouncy balancers, and low reach pull-up bars. There’s another smaller playground on-site too that is more toddler friendly.

Inter River Bike Park

This beautiful park has it all, a playground and an outdoor area for kids who loves biking, and tons of trails for parents. It also has several soccer fields, baseball pitches, lacrosse arena and a number of trails taking you to either Seymour or Grouse Mountain — making it the perfect backdrop for the bike skills park. There’s a dirt jump and technical features training area that is open to the public seven days a week.

The Shipyards Night Market is kicking off their 11th year on Friday May 10. The market will be taking place every Friday from May 10 to September 13, 2024. Starting at 3 pm and ending at 10 pm.

The season of joy is right around the corner, and North Vancouver is looking to start the holiday cheer early with this year’s Spirit of the Season Festival.

The beloved annual event returns with FREE live music, ice skating, live entertainment and dazzling lights to warm our hearts.

Spirit of the Season Festival 2023

The holiday magic all starts on Saturday Dec 2, as The Shipyards host a plethora of family friendly activities including live music, ice skating and entertainment.

Santa and Mrs Claus open the festivities with their arrival atop a fire truck at 4 pm. They are accompanied by ceremonies by the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, and a performance by the Eagle Song Dancers. Next is the the exciting moment the huge 30-foot Christmas tree is lit at the bottom of Lonsdale.

Other enticing entertainment at the festival are live shows by the Ridgeway School Band, the Carson Graham Vocal Jazz Choir, and The ShowStoppers (a GLEE troupe).

And don’t forget the dance shows from Method of Modern Movement, Perform Art Studios, North Shore Academy of Dancing, and Ballet Bloch.

That’s not all, as there are many more fun activities, including:

  • Burrard Yacht Club Festival of Lights Boat Parade (6:15pm)
  • Holiday artisan market at The Pipe Shop (12pm-6pm)
  • Free hot chocolate and a selection of food trucks

Kick off the holidays with style at Vancouver’s unique Christmas holiday show, the Burrard Yacht Club Festival of Lights Boat Parade.

So grab the family, prepare some snacks and venture down to the North Shore waterfront to see a procession that is as merry as it is bright.

Burrard Yacht Club Festival of Lights 2023

Vancouver’s North Shore will once again be alight with a dazzling parade full of festive light displays. The popular North Vancouver Festival of Lights Boat Parade returns to continue its 30+ year tradition of warming hearts.

Nearly two dozen boats will strut their stuff on December 2, decked out with wreaths, LEDS, inflatable decorations, Santa Clauses, and snowmen.

And there are many recommended spots to see the shining holiday boats in action. Favourite locations includes the shore at Waterfront Park, the pier at the Shipyards, or a waterfront restaurant.

The parade is ran by a community of wonderful volunteers at the Burrard Yacht Club. Many of the shimmering boats on display will be from the very same club, along with some others from the local community.

The event looks to give back to the community. They have previously raised money for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. This year’s charity is yet to be confirmed.

Event Details

When: Saturday, December 2 at 6pm.

Where: The route starts at the Burrard Yacht Club before moving through the Shipyards in North Vancouver. The next destination is Coal Harbour, before circling back towards the Burrard club to complete the loop.

Cost: It is free to view the event

Grouse Mountain is once again transforming for Peak of Christmas; a mountain top Christmas Village complete with an enchanting Light Walk, outdoor skating pond and more.

With the perfect holiday backdrop, guests of all ages will be transported to a winter wonderland, complete with snow, Santa and his real reindeer, brilliant light installations and Christmas movies in the Theatre in the Sky.

This year, the celebration will take place from November 24 till December 25.

Peak of Christmas

The elves are hard at work preparing the mountaintop for the highly anticipated arrival of Santa Claus at Vancouver’s North Pole and getting the mountain ready for all it’s visitors to enjoy this magical holiday experience.

Here’s what to expect:

There are a large range of activities for guest to enjoy this holiday season. All Peak of Christmas activities are complimentary with a Mountain Admission Ticket, Annual Membership, Winter Seasons Pass or Lift Ticket.

Santa’s Workshop (Open daily from 11am – 8pm): Guests of all ages can share their Christmas wishes and get a holiday photo. T

his year, you can book your spot online when you arrive at the mountain, so you don’t have to wait in line and can enjoy the Peak of Christmas fun. You can also take a photo with Santa for a donation, and all the money goes to Family Services North Shore.

Elf Headquarters (Open daily from 10am – 8 pm): Located inside the Chalet, this area will provide plenty of activities for the kids, such as writing letters to Santa, decorating reindeer antlers, and making other crafts to keep them engaged.

Light Walk (Open daily, best experience between dusk – 9pm): Enjoy outdoor fun by strolling through the captivating Light Walk around Blue Grouse Lake or taking a spin on the 8,000 square foot Mountaintop Skating Pond surrounded by breathtaking views.

You’ll find the entrance marked by a glowing light tunnel, and along the way, you’ll encounter new and improved features, like an impressive 8-foot tall, 14-foot long illuminated bear.

Theatre in the Sky (Open daily, on rotation from 9:30am – 8pm): On the mountaintop, this high-definition cinema, “Theatre in the Sky”, will be playing a selection of holiday movies, including cherished Christmas classics and beloved family favorites.

Breakfast with Santa

An annual favourite, the Breakfast with Santa program is a time-honoured tradition where guests enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet, visit with Santa Claus himself, and share in the joy of the season with his elves.

The event is held in Altitudes Bistro, select dates with an additional fee. Tickets goes on Sale November 10th.

The much-loved holiday event Canyon Lights will be returning to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park this November with thousands of sparking lights.

Capilano Canyon Lights 2023

The world famous 140-metre bridge will be illuminated in a dazzling end to end light display.

Marvel in the ever-changing colorful lights while overlooking the breathtaking Capilano River.

Fear not – it is not just the bridge that is in festive spirits. The serene rainforest will also be decorated with twinkling displays.

There are many perfect opportunities to take Instagram-worthy photos. For example, walk high above the colorful Douglas firs in the transformed Treetops Adventure. Or take in the electrifying views on the 110 feet high cliffside Cliffwalk pathway.

Kids of all ages will love the heavenly hot chocolate, festive live music, Snowy Owl Prowl scavenger hunt, and many more seasonal activities.

Partial proceeds from the event will support the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, of which $450,000 has already been donated. Admissions also help the park host the Twelve Nights of Christmas and offer free passes to local charities.

Event Details

Canyon Lights runs November 17, 2023 until January 21, 2024. The park will close on Christmas Day.

Park hours are 11am to 9pm, and guests can stay in the park for an hour past closing time.

General admission includes tickets for Canyon Lights. Ticket sales start on Thursday, November 2 at 10am.

North Vancouver residents and visitors are in for a treat this weekend as the MCS Yellowknife, a Kingston-class coastal defence vessel in the Royal Canadian Navy, arrives for a special docking at Burrard Dry Dock.

The ship will be open to the public on Saturday, June 17, and Sunday, June 18, offering a unique opportunity for people to explore its impressive features and learn more about the navy.

From 9 AM to 4 PM on both days, attendees will have the chance to tour the MCS Yellowknife and engage with the sailors on board.

Organizers are encouraging visitors to ask questions about the daily responsibilities of navy personnel, their experiences, and what they enjoy about serving in the navy.

This interactive experience will give participants a glimpse into the life and work of those who serve our country.
