All aboard! For a fun activity the whole family can enjoy, look no further than the Burnaby Central Railway.

Operated by the British Columbia Society of Model Engineers, this popular attraction is loved by kids (and all those young at heart).

Burnaby Central Railway

This popular mini train is located at Confederation Park in North Burnaby. This local gem is open 11 am to 5 pm from Easter to Thanksgiving, including weekends and stat holidays.

This year, they open on Good Friday, March 29th, 2024.

The site also features a mini museum, a concession stand, and ample outdoor space suitable — making it the perfect place to host birthday parties, field trips and other group functions.

A post shared by 🇭🇰 🇨🇦 (@saradeeca_)

The trains pull multiple cars carrying 20 or more passengers for a two mile ride through the woods. The course features bridges, tunnels, crossovers and spirals. A single ride takes approximately 10 minutes (but you will likely want to go again).

The train’s engines have all been built by hand based on drawings, patterns and castings. They’re then machined, welded and fabricated into finished locomotives.

The steam engines are true 1/8th scale miniatures and they huff and puff much like their full-size counterparts.

The Garden Railway — one of the largest Guage 1 garden railways in Metro Vancouver — opened in 2018 and is also available for viewing.

Burnaby Central Railway has three battery-powered miniature electric and diesel locomotives, as well as a gas powered hydraulic engine, that are ready to respond quickly when demand for rides is high.

Rides are super cheap too — only $4.50 for each ride and that applies to all guests 3 and up.

About the Railway

When: Open 11 am to 5 pm from Easter to Thanksgiving, including weekends and stat holidays

Where: Confederation Park at 120 North Willingdon Avenue, five blocks north of East Hastings Street, Burnaby

Cost: $4.50 for a single ride for all passengers 3 years old and up or $40.00 for 10 ride passes (the pass may be used over multiple days, and there’s no expiration date)

The playground situated at Champlain Heights Community Centre is one of three neighborhood playgrounds currently undergoing upgrades. The other two are smaller play areas situated along the walking paths between Champlain Crescent and Matheson Crescent.

The playground opened at the end of May and features a play tower, hill slide, in-ground trampoline, net spinner, a water play feature, and plenty of trees for shade.

Brewers Park

This is a fairly new playground that opened up in 2021. The park has been designed to have three distinct areas. Each with its own unique features, and is rich in diversity. Creekside Park

This playground is newly renovated making it shiny and bright. Set in beautiful False Creek, it has a zip line, sand and water feature, 2 storey slide and lots of climbing structures. The area is surrounded by picnic tables and is also next to Science World, lot of fun to be had here.

Not that you need another reason to make Granville Island appealing, but there is a waterpark that is pretty spectacular, next to the Kids Market. It’s large, bright, has a winding slide, fire hydrant and lots of room to splash and run around.

Charleson Park

Another park in False Creek in Fairview, this playground also comes with a stunning view. Some of the cool features here is a wooden ship play structure, in-ground trampolines, a spinner/climber feature all on rubber surfacing. Kids enjoy hours of play here often.

A post shared by Little Explorers (@vancouver_kids)

This popular area for many kids and kids events and activities comes complete with a huge playground area. There is also a sand pit, in-ground trampoline, a zip line, play houses and as per usual some amazing climbing structures. There are a lot of options to get kids of all ages running off some energy.

Jones Park

A well known feature at this park is the giant wooden snail that kids love to climb, and it sprouts water in the summer. The actual playground, and slide, is shaped as a wooden pirate ship and allows for a lot of imagination for the little ones. A bonus here is that you can often actually find street parking (which we all know can be rare).

Kaslo Park

Part of the charm here is the grassy slopes that overlooks the entire neighbourhood. The playground itself is brand new and just renovated in July 2020 with bright new play structures, a sloped/rubber climbing wall and and embankment slide.

Mount Pleasant Park

This becomes a popular hot spot every summer for kids of all ages. This large park has 3 playgrounds (one for each age group) along with a sandpit, a skate park, and basketball courts. The area also has a huge grass field where (pre-pandemic days) many outdoor movies are hosted. Last summer it was frequented by Salty’s Lobster Food Truck, making it a fun place to spend the day and have a picnic.

The trail runs 1.5 kms long and takes about 45 minutes to complete. It reaches 308 metres at its highest point.

It’s also lined with lush Douglas fir, western red cedar, hemlock and grand fir trees so it’s the perfect place for forest bathing.

Once you arrive at the falls, you’ll be treated to its pristine impossibly-blue waters. It also gives you a great vantage point to take in views of Buttle Lake, further down the falls.
