Calling all foodies! A new vermicelli-focused food cart is coming to Vancouver’s West End on Wednesday, July 17th. Nami is introducing its newest member to its ever-so-popular food cart family.

And it gets better—the first 50 customers in line on opening day get a free vermicelli bowl. The food cart will be conveniently located at Burrard and Davie Street.

Nami 2.0 is the latest project for Kevin Thach, who learned first-hand from his parents’ award-winning Pho Thai Hoa 1 Vietnamese restaurant in Vancouver.

The new food cart is following in the foot steps of the original, which made its debut in April. The original Nami focuses mostly on fresh-made báhn mì baguette sandwiches but the new one will be more about vermicelli bowls.

These are just a few of the delicious bowls they’re offering:

  • Classic Bowl: Vermicelli topped with pork or vegan spring roll, shredded cabbage, bean sprouts, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber and mixed herbs with a choice of protein and dressing.
  • Banana Blossom Salad Bowl: Banana blossom, kale and spinach topped with cabbage, bean sprouts, carrots, cucumber, mung bean and mixed herbs with a choice of protein and dressing.
  • Garlic Beef Vermicelli Bowl: Vermicelli topped with sautéed garlic beef in a garlic, lemongrass and onion sauce with shredded cabbage, cucumber, mixed herbs and spicy chili lime dressing.

It also includes a variety of sides, like deep-fried spring rolls, salad rolls, grilled skewers, and iced Vietnamese coffee.

Old Country Pierogi is the first food truck in Metro Vancouver to accept Bitcoins, one of the more popular and well-known digital currencies available out there, as monetary payment in exchange for a taste of their Eastern European food options. A family-owned mobile restaurant business based in Surrey, Old Country Pierogi debuted the beginning of an era at this year’s Car Free Day at the Main Street location, with their soft launch scheduled at North Shore Green Market.

It’s quite the forward-thinking move for a food truck to make, especially one with a name that strives to cultivate a traditional image for food authenticity and Old World nostalgia. Even the official site for Old Country Pierogi depicts a proud girl holding up a plate of dumplings with wheat framing her on either side. Despite the pioneer vibes, Old Country Pierogi is, like many food trucks, marketed to consumers as a trendy alternative, and what’s more trendy than being able to pay for your gluten-free pierogies through the cryptocurrency of the town?

In partnership with The Bitcoin Co-op association of British Columbia, interested businesses can look at their website for further information: bitcoincoop.org

Good news foodies! 11 food carts will roll out in Vancouver parks and beaches this summer and offer both locals and tourists a new menu to enjoy while soaking in the sun and stunning local scenery.

The Vancouver Park Board has granted permits to 11 vendors in 15 sites—the highest number of participants to date. Food carts began operating in three park sites in Vancouver two years ago as part of a pilot. All vendors are expected to be up and running by mid-June.

BerryMobile will be operating three fresh fruit stands adjacent to concessions at Second Beach, Lumberman’s Arch and Spanish Banks. The stands will be set up like roadside markets with ready-to-eat fruit in baskets. By Canada Day, BerryMobile expects to be selling the newly named Squamish raspberry—a large, firm, flavourful and bright red fruit that was bred in British Columbia.

Back by popular demand is Vancouver Beach Nuts, which will be selling fresh coconuts from a Tiki bar at Kitsilano Beach and, new this year, at English Bay. Jim’s Ice Cream will be selling novelty ice cream at Vanier Park and Japadog, a popular chain of street food stands and restaurants, will be operating beside the Information Booth in Stanley Park.

Food carts at Vancouver parks and beaches 2014:

  • BerryMobile at Second Beach and Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park and Spanish Banks
  • Candy Meister at Second Beach
  • Cup a Corn in Vanier Park
  • Fijian Fusion in Vanier Park
  • Japadog in Stanley Park
  • Jim’s Ice Cream in Vanier Park
  • Lemon Heaven at Kits Beach
  • Potato Tornado Shack at Kits Beach
  • Roaming Popcorn at Seawall in Devonian Park
  • San Juan Family Farm at Devonian Plaza and English Bay
  • Vancouver Beach Nuts at Kits Beach and English Bay

Most of the Park Board’s 14 concessions will continue to provide local food options such as berry popsicles, berry and yogurt parfaits and veggies and dips in support of the Park Board’s Local Food Action Plan. The plan, which highlights priority areas and actions to increase local food assets in Vancouver parks and recreation facilities, was unveiled last summer.
