Escape to a lesser-known part of the province known as Blakeburn.

The Blakeburn Site is now a ghost town but it once was a coal mining community just southwest of Granite Creek and the Tulameen River.

The abandoned village is situated above the surviving mining town of Coalmont.

Blakeburn was named after William John “Blake” Wilson, the President of Coalmont Collieries Ltd. in 1923.

The town was home to more than 500 people at its peak. It had a school, community hall, two churches, several homes, tennis courts and an ice rink.

Forty-five people were killed there in 1930, when a lightning storm caused an explosion in the area. The mine reopened the following year and coal operation continued for another decade. But in 1940, it was shut down for economic reasons.

A few structures are still standing—making it a cool spot to check out while on a road trip.

There are a number of other stops to make while down in the Similkameen Valley, including the villages of Coalmont and Tulameen—just outside of Princeton.

These spots are perfect for people who just want to get away and explore an area that is more off the beaten path.

Coalmont is about 20 minutes northwest of Princeton and has a population of about 100 people. The quaint town is known for its impressive outdoor recreational activities, especially fishing.

Tulameen is a 12 or so minute drive northwest of Coalmont. It’s slightly larger and has about 250 permanent residents. The charming town is a great place to relax and go for a scenic stroll around the serene Otter Lake.

Hume Hotel is one of the province’s oldest hotels which also makes sense why people consider it to be one of the most haunted places too.

The hotel is located in the small hippie community of Nelson. The hotel first opened in 1898 and was one of the most modern accommodations of its kind at the time—with electric lights and steam radiators.

But over the many years it has been in business, guests have reported some pretty eerie findings. Some say there was a feeling of being watched. They speculate that it may be the ghosts of the owners or the spirits of people who have been there before them.

Most of the stories are about Room #335 specifically, which no longer exists after a renovation project took place.

Multiple guests have said they have seen a well-dressed man wearing a bowler-hat who goes around checking to make sure the hotel is up to par. That ghost is actually known around the Kootenay region as being a ‘caretaker ghost’.

Other creepy moments include: taps dripping when they’re off and TVs turning on and off randomly.

One paranormal expert, Chris Holland visited the Hume Hotel and even worked on a short film called Haunt at the Hume—outlining his exploration of the hotel with the Nelson Paranormal League. Holland is one of the many who believe the hotel is full of ‘caretaker ghosts’ and that people should stay on their good side.

But despite its eerie past and all the spooky ghost tales, it remains a popular place for people to stay. The boutique hotel has a lot of modern touches to it and is one of the town’s most popular accommodations.

Despite its relatively young age, Vancouver’s buildings have plenty of history to tell and Waterfront Station is no exception.

First built by the Pacific Railway Station in 1915, Waterfront Station has had thousands pass through its doors. While most of those are alive and well commuters, some people can attest to seeing spirits wander the halls of the station.

Here are some creepy stories from Waterfront Station.

Flappers and Fading Music

The book, Ghosts of Vancouver, has plenty of stories to tell, including one from a guard at Waterfront station. The guard claimed to have seen a woman who appeared in a red flapper style dress dancing alone on the West side of the building.

The guard said he could hear the sound of 1920’s jazz playing, but when he approached the woman, she disappeared and the music ceased.

“Glowing Phosphorous White”

On the Northwest side of the station, another security guard was stopped in his tracks by the ghost of an old woman.

He entered the empty room with nothing but a flashlight for a source of light when he saw her, “glowing phosphorous white,” as described on Ghosts of Vancouver. She looked mournful, he said. But when the woman reached out to him, he ran from the room.

Painting of a Woman

Yet another security guard told the story of being haunted by a woman at the station. He was in an old kitchen when he saw the old woman.

He came face to face with the apparition, who stared at him intently. She started to float toward him when the guard panicked and ran away. But that wasn’t his last encounter. The man started to dream of her every night and saw her face in mirrors and windows.

He had the urge to paint her, even though he wasn’t an artist at all. He brought the portrait to the old kitchen and left it where he saw the woman. That was the last time he had seen her.

Stephanie Watts of Ghostly Tours Vancouver told CTV News a man who worked at the station approached one of the tour guides. The man mentioned the old kitchen was still there and management had tried to move the painting.

When they did, the painting’s mover began having dreams of the old woman. The painting was returned to its original spot and the mover’s dreams about her ceased.

Headless Railway Worker

Several people said they have seen the ghost of a headless railway worker outside the station. In 1928, a railway worker named Hub Clark was killed at work when he slipped on the wet railroad tracks.

He was knocked unconscious when a train came by and decapitated him. Several people have since reported seeing the headless man with a lantern along the railway tracks.

Phantom Footsteps

Both security guards and commuters have attested to hearing footsteps walking on tiled floors late at night with nobody else around. Several people have also said they have seen the ghosts of three old ladies sitting on a station bench.

Here’s a question for you to contemplate: What if those three old ladies were the woman from the first three ghost stories?

Either it be a date night or just an evening out with friends, get your heart pumping with a good meal and a better ghost story. If you’re (un)lucky, you may even end the night off with spotting a ghost or two.

Fairmont Hotel Vancouver

One of Vancouver’s most well-known ghosts is believed to be the “Lady in Red.” According to the legend, she haunts the iconic Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on West Georgia to this day. Built in 1939, many have said they’ve seen her, usually on the 14th floor or ground floor lobby just roaming around.

Ghosts of Vancouver states it all began when a Japanese family checked into the hotel and asked if it was double-booked after seeing the woman. Strange sounds and disembodied footsteps have also been recorded by security cameras. You can read more about it on the Fairmont Guest Stories site.

Haunted House at Cambie & King Edward

This spot is best known as being one of Vancouver’s most haunted houses. There are some mixed reports about what exactly what went on here, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Some say it was built on an ancient burial ground, while others believe a man murdered his elderly mother inside the home. But one thing is for sure, some strange activity has gone down here.

Anyone who has lived in the home since has reported strange occurrences, including shadowed footsteps walking on the walls, baby cribs being pushed to the edge of the window and luggage being left in the yard.

Fairacres Mansion

This large 2.5-storey estate house is nestled in Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park. While it’s a popular historical place to visit, it’s also believed to be haunted. It was built back in 1910 and was known as the “Ceperley Home.” Over the years, it was also host to a number of different groups. Including a tuberculosis annex for Vancouver General Hospital, host to a cult known as The Temple of the More Abundant Life, and an unaccredited school that allegedly practiced ritual on students.

At this time, the mansion turned art gallery is said to be home to the ghost of Mrs. Ceperley. Over the years, gallery staff has experienced faint musical sounds, phantom phone calls, chilling presences, and items mysteriously being moved.

Hycroft Manor

The picturesque and historical Hycroft Manor can be found in the upscale Vancouver neighbourhood of Shaughnessy.

Throughout the years, there have been many instances of paranormal behaviour in the mansion, leading people to believe it is actually haunted. Guests has reported getting cold chills, hearing a child crying on the second floor, and seeing a ghostly female figure walking along the hallways on the third floor.

It’s believed to house seven different ghosts, as it served as a veterans hospital just after WWII. They are said to include a nurse and several veterans.

Irving House

While this quaint house looks charming on the outside, it has a creepy past. Located in New Westminster, the Irving House is built in the Gothic Revival style and hosts much of the original décor, including the bed where William Irving died in 1872.

In the 1950’s, the home was sold to the city and turned into a museum. However, since then there as been reported incidences with the ghost of William. This includes feeling something brush past you on the stairs, sleeping imprints on the bed where he died, and seeing a small blue light in the library window at night. You can book a tour at the Irvng house here.

Riverview Hospital

This historic hospital in Coquitlam has an incredibly eerie past. It treated patients dating back to 1913 and it was only just shut down in 2010. It’s one of the most filmed locations in BC and it’s easy to see why. The abandoned building is a creepy place to visit (if you dare).

Back in the day, it housed up to 919 patients, even though the space was only equipped for about 480. There’s been a number of ghost sightings here over the years by a former janitor and others who have roamed through the halls.

The Stave Falls Dam & Powerhouse

The Vancouver Paranormal Society claims this Mission spot is one of the most haunted places in the Lower Mainland. The powerhouse first opened in 1912 and was decommissioned in 2000. It was later turned into an information centre for tourists to learn more about hydroelectric power.

There have been multiple reports of strange activity here, including chairs moving on their own, whispers, shadows, a dog barking and more. Below is a story from their website, and you can read more here.

“While opening up the Visitor Centre one morning, an employee unlocked the doors, turned off the alarm, and as she made her way inside, heard a man’s voice yell out “hello?” as if asking who was there. She was the only person in the building. At the end of the night, after all the visitors are gone, tour guides have heard what sounds like families laughing and enjoying the exhibits. Sometimes the displays will even start working on their own.”

The Fairmont Empress Hotel

The Empress is one of the most stunning hotels in Victoria. But it’s also known as being one of the most haunted.

Visitors have reported seeing a variety of ghosts here, including an elderly woman who knocks on doors and gets them to follow her to the elevator and then vanishes. There’s also a man’s spirit who is often seen wandering the halls who is thought to be the building’s architect.

There’s nothing more haunting than wandering through an entire town that has been abandoned. The ghost town of Kitsault is a small community surrounded by mines and mountains. While there are houses still standing, they’ve sat empty for more than 30 years. It was built in the 1970s for the employees of a magnesium mine but they all fled when the mine became unprofitable. The town can be found in northern B.C., at the head of Alice Arm. It is currently private property, but tours may be available for booking.

Cassiar was once a small company-owned asbestos mining town, located north of Dease Lake in the Cassiar Mountains. The mine was forced to close in 1992 after operating for 40 years. It has since been a ghost town and most of the houses were destroyed and burned to the ground. It’s an eerie place to visit to this day.

Tranquille Sanatorium, Kamloops

Last but not least, one of the creepiest places to visit in the province is the Tranquille Sanatorium in Kamloops. Going back to the early 1900s, this is where those suffering with tuberculosis were treated. More than 1,500 people died here as a result of the disease. It was even highlighted on an MTV show appropriately called “Fear.” The manager of the now historic site says it’s not a place haunted by ghosts but rather a place where its true history makes it unnerving and mysterious.

Located at the corner of Davie and Nicola Streets, the Gabriola House greets passersby with its ominous presence.

Once upon a time, there were a litany of impressive, grand homes like it in Vancouver’s West End; however, it is the last of its kind.

A relic of times long gone, this Victorian structure seems mildly out of place. Built at the turn of the 20th century, the home exudes mystery. As a result, it isn’t hard to fathom why the abode has been the centre of many paranormal tales.

RELATED:

Standing at 1523 Davie Street, the home is the site of numerous ghost sightings, every year. In fact, many people say that they’ve seen ghosts in the window. Further, many claim they’ve seen multiple ghosts in the residence.

When the mansion was a restaurant, for example, staff claim they encountered ghosts on a regular basis. Further, they claim that utensils, such as cutlery, actually floated in the air.

What’s more, the site was also the site of a horrific murder in 2016. Specifically, the body of a Japanese Student named Natsumi Kogawa was found inside.

Haunted Gabriola House

Interestingly, the home was built by the founder of B.C. Sugar, B.T. Rogers. After he passed away, the home was converted into an apartment building. Following that, the residence was converted into a restaurant called Romano’s Macaroni Grill. Since shutting down, the home sat vacant for many years.

Unfortunately for horror fans, this haunted home was sold for a whopping $6.72 million in 2021. The long-standing mansion will be converted into a rental condos and townhouses put in its place.

Update: While the home is being converted, final plans do not include tearing down the structure. Instead, the building will undergo renovations.

It’s one of the most popular and stunning hotels in Victoria. But it’s also known as being one of the most haunted. Visitors have reported seeing a variety of ghosts, including an elderly woman who knocks on doors and gets them to follow her to the elevator and then vanishes. There’s also a man’s spirit who is often seen wandering the halls who is thought to be the building’s architect.

British Columbia’s very first treatment centre for those suffering from mental illness was opened in 1876, as part of Royal Hospital in Victoria. The hospital was later closed due to overcrowding and the 1,000-acre lot in Coquitlam was purchased to construct Riverview Hospital.

In 1913, the building commonly known as West Lawn began treating around 300 mentally-ill male patients. While the building was intended to house 480 patients, it ended up housing a whopping 919.

The hospital is adjacent to Colony Farm, where the patients would work to help grow the crops.

The acute psychopathic unit known as Centre Lawn opened in 1924, followed by the opening of East Lawn in 1930, which acted as a female chronic unit.

Then the Veteran’s unit opened up in 1934, with the second phase completed in 1949—making it the hospital’s most significant building. The final addition was the tuberculosis unit, known as the North Lawn opened in 1955. One of the buildings treated patients as recently as the Summer of 2010.

The hospital has had a number of ghost sightings by a former janitor and others who walked the mysterious halls over the years. It’s without a doubt a creepy place.

The West Lawn building has been abandoned since 1983 and it’s an especially chilling part of the hospital.

Riverview Hospital’s creepy appearance has been featured in many TV and film roles. They include: Smallville, The X-Files, The 4400, Stargate Atlantis, Halloween: Resurrection, Ghost Tour and more.

Real Haunted Houses In Metro Vancouver

Haunted House At Cambie & King Edward

Known as being one of Vancouver’s most haunted houses (for real). There are some mixed reports about what exactly what went on here. Some say it was built on an ancient burial ground, while others mention a man murdered his elderly mother inside the home. But one thing is for sure—some strange activity has gone down here.

Anyone who has lived in the home since has reported some strange occurrences, including shadowed footsteps walking on the walls, baby cribs being pushed to the edge of the window and luggage being left in the yard.

The large 2.5-storey estate house is nestled in Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park. While it’s a popular historical place to visit, it’s also believed to be haunted.

It was built back in 1910 and was known as the ‘Ceperley Home.’ The mansion turned art gallery is said to be home to the ghost of Mrs. Ceperley herself.

The stunning and historical Hycroft Manor can be found in the upscale Vancouver neighbourhood of Shaughnessy.

Throughout the years, there have been many instances of paranormal behaviour in the mansion. It is believed to house not one not two, but seven different ghosts. They are said to include a nurse and several veterans.

The little house looks so charming on the outside but it has a creepy past. Now, a museum in New Westminster—it is believed to be home to the ghost of a 13-year-old girl.

Apparently the young girl committed suicide back in 2002, and her ghost has been seen by many. She is described as having a completely white face with black eyes, wearing jeans, a red hoodie and carrying a backpack.

While it’s technically not a house, this place can’t be left out. The historic hospital in Coquitlam has an incredibly eerie past.

The hospital treated patients dating back to 1913 and it was only just shut down in 2010.

Standing at 1523 Davie Street, the home is the site of numerous ghost sightings, every year. In fact, many people say that they’ve seen ghosts in the window. Further, many claim they’ve seen multiple ghosts in the residence.

The building has since been redeveloped into rental condos and townhouses put in its place. However, it’s intriguing history still makes the building a spooky spot.
