“A gentleman using a lighter and aerosol can to make fireballs…it scared everyone out of the car aside from him and I. I can hold my own so I wasn’t concerned. He was a nice enough guy and seemed like he was maybe going through something so I asked him why he was doing that, he said he was stressed…” – Ryan Lacey

“It’s been a while since I did my daily commute via SkyTrain, but years ago, I was excited when 2 gorgeous women in sexy outfits came in and sat behind me. I was taken aback, though, when suddenly I heard them talking to each other in their deep male voices. It really was Vancouver wild! 😁✌️ – Rick VanDale Brions

“Once on the older trains with that back bench I saw two teenagers have sexual relations on the bench Saturday night after a concert. It was busy I don’t think anyone noticed. Was wild!” – Tia Nikkel

“I saw a homeless dude take a dump on a skytrain seat and 2 min later flick it off and under the seat in front.” – Adam Skeen

“A snake, a streaker, a robbery. Not all at once though! And I don’t even take transit on the regular!” – Vonnie Cee

“Rough and tumble guy gets on, plops directly in front of me sparks a joint. Looks like he was released from jail an hour before. Gestured to share with me, I demurred. No thanks, bit early for me. Workday 8 AM commute to downtown with the appropriate crowd. Fun times.” – Rick Hiltz

“The annual Santacon in Vancouver always has a couple dudes who try to have a jerry can full of liquor. Nothing like seeing folks drink out of a jerry can on the sky train. Simply breathtaking…” Chris Marchant

Crews officially begun working on the early stages of the Pattullo Bridge Replacement project in February of 2021.

The renderings convey that the new cable-suspension bridge will have four lanes in total. They originally expected to open the new crossing in 2023, however it was announced that a 2024 completion date is looking more realistic.

The $1.377 billion project is being managed and supervised by Transportation Investment Corporation, a government-owned organization

As many have noticed, the original 80-year-old bridge has been in dire need of a makeover. Not only is the bridge old, but it is no longer able to accommodate the number of daily crossings.

For this reason, the lanes on the bridge are being built 10% wider and will therefore accommodate heavier traffic.

In addition, the bridge will be built with the possibility to expand into six lanes.

Also, the bridge will have separated bike lanes and pedestrian paths on the edges in both directions.

Pattullo Bridge Replacement

The new bridge will be located just north and upstream of the existing bridge, and will provide:

  • A safer crossing with wider lanes and a centre median that separates traffic travelling in opposite directions.
  • Modern lane widths to increase capacity on the bridge by 10%.
  • Improved community connections in New Westminster and Surrey.
  • Separate pedestrian and cyclist paths.

The crossing is part of the Major Road Network, serving primarily as a connection between Surrey, New Westminster and Burnaby. As a result, it is a critical transportation link for the movement of people, goods, and services.

To facilitate the new bridge there will be a realignment and extension of Scott Road creating a direct connection to King George Boulevard. In addition, the bridge will connect with the westbound lanes of Highway 17.

It has been a few years since the announcement of the plans to replace the 62-year old George Massey Tunnel. It now appears the project is finally underway.

The B.C. government has just released a request for qualifications to shortlist potential contractors for the construction of the new eight-lane tunnel beneath the Fraser River.

Although the project itself will take another decade to complete, this is a major milestone for moving forward.

At 629m long, the Massey Tunnel sees on average 80,000 vehicle trips a day. It is an extremely busy route that is often congested during traffic hours.

A better solution to traffic between Richmond and Delta on Highway 99 has been in discussions for years. Now a new plan has been confirmed. The existing tunnel will be replaced with an 8-lane immersed tube tunnel.

The Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Rob Fleming confirmed on March 18, 2021 that the tunnel is slated to be fully open sometime in 2030 at the latest. The existing crossing will be decommissioned by 2032.

Prior to beginning construction on the new tunnel the existing Steveston interchange will be replaced. The work is already underway and is slated to complete in late 2025.

By the end of this year we are expected to see a Bridgeport Road bus connection and a widening of the Hwy 99 and 17A off-ramp. By the end of 2023 there is expected to be new Bus-on-shoulder transit lanes on Hwy 99.

More On The Project

The original estimate for the total cost of the project was $4.5 billion, it has now been updated to $4.15. The new toll-free tunnel will feature 8 lanes, 2 of which will be dedicated to bus rapid transit. There will also be a separated paths for cyclists and pedestrians.

After Tesla first announced their electric semi truck back in 2017, there hasn’t been much progress… that is until now.

Earlier this year, Pepsi finally received the first order of the Tesla Semi. They have received 36 trucks so far, and plans to roll out 100 more before the end of the year. Other company’s have also started receiving their orders.

Hopefully, this will mean that B.C. will soon be seeing an electric fleet of Tesla trucks on the road.

RELATED: This Vancouver Couple Lives Rent-free in an Ambulance

However, it was reported in April that Tesla had recalled a number of their electric semi-trucks. This comes only a few months after they were introduced to the market. The recall was initiated due to concerns over the possibility of the vehicles rolling away as a result of a potential emergency brake malfunction.

It is unclear how that would affect further production, but we do hope it gets resolved soon.

Which BC Companies Ordered Tesla Trucks?

In 2021, two Vancouver Island companies announced that they have placed an order for these futuristic electric vehicles.

One of these companies is Mosaic Forest Management, which has 300 diesel-powered trucks used for logging as well as carrying materials to and from the island.

The Tesla trucks will be tried out as a pilot project. The company will be adding 3 trucks to their fleet and testing them out in the field over the next few years.

Another company, is jumping on board with the electric semi-trailers. Quality Foods has also announced they will be a part of this transition and testing out the Tesla Trucks within their fleet. They also have place an order for 3 Tesla trucks and adding them to their existing 9 trucks.

Quality Foods plans to test out the electric trucks to deliver food to 13 stores across Vancouver Island and Powell River.

The Washington State Department of Transportation states Amtrak train service between Seattle and Vancouver will resume in September.

Earlier this year, Amtrak announced routes would resume in Spring 2022 but that timeline was delayed to December due to lack of staff. However, in a recent update, WSDOT stated Amtrak will be able to advance its schedule for service by the end of summer.

In May, Amtrak announced that its original plans to resume the route in Spring 2022 were being pushed back to December because of staffing issues.

The route which travels between Vancouver, Bellingham, Mount Vernon, Stanwood, Everett, Edmonds and Seattle has been suspended since May 2020 when the Canadian border was closed to non-essential travel.

The land border has since reopened.

The Cascades route had an annual ridership of 800,000 prior to the pandemic.

Earlier this year Washington State approved a $150 million budget to review and plan a high-speed rail service operating between British Columbia, Washington and Oregon.

If plans are to move forward, the project will cost $42 billion and potentially replace the Amtrak in the future.

With the rising cost of gas prices, many will be relieved to hear there is a new affordable transportation system between Vancouver and Seattle. FlixBus has announced a new route between the two cities with one-way fares starting at $18.

FlixBus is the company that purchased Greyhound in 2021. According to a press release, it hopes to fill the void created by the cancellation of other cross-border connections during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Let’s not let high gas prices get in the way of the vacations we all deserve,” said FlixBus North America managing director Pierre Gourdain. “Never has it been so easy and affordable to bridge borders between the most beautiful cities in the Pacific Northwest.”

Vancouver to Seattle Bus Service

The new cross-border route was planning to launch May 26, but hit a short delay. However, the new route officially kicked off on June 2.

It operates five days a week from Thursday to Monday.

FlixBus buses leave Vancouver from Richards Street near Waterfront Station at 12:45 p.m. and arrive in Seattle around 4 p.m.

The Canada bound buses leaves Seattle at 7:30 a.m. with scheduled stops in Everett, Bellingham, and at Pacific Central Station near Vancouver’s Main Street-Science World SkyTrain station before ending its trip at Richards Street at approximately 11:30 a.m.

The cross-border route will be operated by MTRWestern Inc. Each passenger will have access to free Wi-Fi and power outlets at every seat.

Some people’s morning commute to work is over an hour on transit and this can be problematic if one needs to go to the bathroom. That is why, in response to customer feedback, Translink is looking to install public bathrooms along its routes at high traffic stops.

For many adults transiting for an hour or longer is not an issue. For others, or for people travelling with children, it can be a significant obstacle to using public transit.

RELATED: New BC Transit Route Will Finally Connect Lougheed Skytrain to Chilliwack

At this point, people with medical issues requiring increased bathroom usage, must rely on private businesses along transit routes for a bathroom; or, they just don’t make long transit trips at all.

Public transit should be accessible to everyone and having public washrooms makes transit more accessible.

The bathroom discussions are part of Translink’s Customer Experience Action Plan. It brings a whole host of improvements with it, and at this point it’s up to the city to decide which it implements.

It’s not just a matter of building public washrooms but maintaining them for safety and hygiene.
